Poudre School District has provided an update to families and staff following the elevated levels of copper found in Wellington Middle-High School last year. Wellington is a tight-knit community, and we understand that even if you are not involved in the school, you may have questions about how copper was detected in water within the school's facilities.
Water that sits in pipes or fixtures can lead to corrosion in internal plumbing systems. This can lead to the leaching of metals, such as copper, from pipes and fixtures.
Water provided to the Wellington community has been tested for copper through the distribution system at more than 60 points twice a year, and a copper exceedance has never been detected. The Town of Wellington is required to regularly test drinking water in accordance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Colorado regulations. Our utility was required to begin biannual lead and copper testing in 2017.
In 2022, the Town of Wellington completed over 6,700 additional water quality tests to ensure our water's safety. Wellington's water met all state and federal drinking water health standards, which are the primary standards for treating and monitoring water.
